As a pastor for more than 16 years, Arthur Boers knows the pulse of the church from a pastoral point of view and brings this depth of experience to his teaching. In addition, Arthur has a particular interest in nurturing spiritual life--his own and that of people in pastoral roles. He has been a participant in a pilot project of the Lilly Endowment and Louisville Institute which involved a group of pastors with varied backgrounds meeting regularly to explore what is needed to sustain vibrant ministry in long-term pastoral work.

Arthur joined the AMBS faculty in early 2002, coming from serving as pastor of an Ontario congregation. His teaching reflects the ways in which he has built bridges not only across national borders--having pastored in both Canada and the United States--but also among different denominational traditions and between academic study and day-to-day ministry.

"Pastoring is paradoxical. It privileges one to accompany folks in both the hardest and happiest of times, dealing with the sublime, the mundane and the tragic. It is often difficult to believe one is paid for such awesome, holy, and even fun tasks.

With such varied challenges, ministry involves one's personal integrity, spiritual formation, and professional competence, while calling us to the imaginative weaving together of biblical reflection, theology, preaching, discernment, communication, listening, counseling, and care. Pastoral theology guides and helps one to thrive in the seemingly impossible but endlessly stimulating venture of pastoring."
