Mennonite
Church General Board minutes, dated April 17, 1993
ACTION 19:
"That the Mennonite Church General
Board responds to the Report of the Listening Committee for Homosexual
Concerns as follows.
a. To receive the report of
the Listening Committee for Homosexual Concerns with thanks for handling
well a very difficult assignment.
b. To affirm the 1987 General
Assembly statement, "A Call to Affirmation, Confession, and Covenant Regarding
Sexuality" with its references on homosexuality as representing the current
denominational position on this question. We comment this statement to
our churchwide boards and agencies as they address issues of sexuality.
c. To affirm the primary responsibility
for congregational and pastoral leadership for homosexuality concerns and
continued study rests with the area conferences and congregations.
d. To assign denominational
responsibilities to MBCM [the Mennonite Board of Congregational Ministries]
for providing consultation and resources on homosexual concerns for congregations
and pastors. Particular concern is encouraged in response to the anguish
and pain of gay people and their families, and in assisting pastors and
congregations to address the needs raised by homosexual people and family
members.
e. To encourage congregations
and conferences to consult with MBCM regarding available resource persons
to assist in addressing homosexual concerns.
f. To make the report of the
Listening Committee for Homosexual Concerns (without committee recommendations)
available as requested for interested persons along with the 1987 General
Assembly statement on human sexuality and the Summary Statements adopted
by the General Board, July 29, 1991.
g. To encourage congregations
and conferences to continue dialogue and study of human sexuality and to
engage in this process in a spirit of openness and Christian love."
