About Dr. Davis

Ellen Davis is professor of Bible and Practical Theology at Duke Divinity School, Durham, N.C. She is interested in theological interpretation of the Old Testament, with particular concern for Christian preaching. Her current work focuses also on developing an exegetically based response to the ecological crisis.

Dr. Davis received a Ph.D. with distinction from Yale University, and honorary doctorates from Wycliffe College, at the University of Toronto and The Church Divinity School of the Pacific. She is the recipient of several grants including most recently a Faculty Fellowship from the Association of Theological Schools in 2007 and a Christian Faith and Life grant from the Louisville Institute for 2006–2007. Both of these were given to support the research project, Remembering the Land: Biblical Interpretation and Ecological Responsibility, a series of essays that bring critical biblical scholarship into conversation with the writings of three generations of modern agrarian writers.

A lay Episcopalian, Dr. Davis has been involved in interfaith dialogue for more than 30 years. Her previous teaching appointments were at Union Theological Seminary (New York City), Yale Divinity School, and the Virginia Theological Seminary. She is author of seven books and numerous articles focusing on Old Testament literature and theology.
