Bruce Baergen, chairperson of the AMBS board of directors, and Rebecca Slough, AMBS academic dean, look over names of donors in order to select those to whom they will write thank you notes.
At AMBS,, Giving Thanks Days fall between the Canadian and U.S. Thanksgiving holidays.
“We say thanks to the people who believe in the mission of AMBS, who believe in your potential to make a difference in the kingdom of God,” Missy Kauffman Schrock, director of development, said at the first celebration on October 23.
The seminary community gathered a second time on October 25, when the AMBS board members were on campus and could join in. On both days, everyone present was invited to write thank-you notes to donors. Each student who receives a specific scholarship sends a note to those who established the fund or to family members of the original donor. Others write notes to those who contribute to the student aid fund and selected donors who support the AMBS annual fund. More than 130 thank-you notes resulted from this year’s Giving Thanks celebrations.
AMBS relies on tuition for approximately one-eighth of the funds needed each year; donations from individuals, congregations and businesses constitute almost one-half of the seminary’s annual income. This keeps tuition affordable for students preparing for work in the church and church-related agencies.
