Local leaders to address issues on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary will host a discussion with local leaders and the presentation of awards for community leadership on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

“We shall overcome: Local leaders address racism, violence and poverty in our communities” is set for Monday, Jan. 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the chapel at AMBS, 3003 Benham Avenue. Three speakers are scheduled:

  • Apostle Willie Coates, Jr., Co-organizer of Empowerment Saturdays in South Bend and host of “The Urban Voice” on WUBS 89.7 FM;
  • Gilberto Pérez, Jr., associate professor of social work at Goshen College and president and CEO of Bienvenido Community Solutions LLC;
  • Rev. Jennifer Tinsley, pastor of St. James AME Church in Elkhart and vice president of Elkhart Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance.

People’s History of Elkhart will cohost the event and present the “Drum Major for Justice” Lifetime Achievement Award and the “Jericho Road Award” for Transformative Change to local recipients.

Refreshments and opportunities for community dialogue will follow the presentations.
