History of the American Society of Missiology, 1973–2013

“This study of the first forty years of the American Society of Missiology is at once a history of that society and an admirably nuanced account of how mission studies have flourished in the United States, despite the secularization of the academy and epic changes in the scope, agents, and locus of mission.” — William R. Burrows, Research Professor of Missiology, World Christianity Program, New York Theological Seminary; Managing Editor Emeritus, Orbis Books

“This timely publication marks the fortieth anniversary of the most missiologically influential academic organization in America. Mission historians will be grateful for Wilbert Shenk’s careful updating and expansion of earlier ASM histories. The book includes a helpful table of contents and six appendices that provide key information relating to officers, annual meetings, and publications of the society.” — Jonathan J. Bonk, Executive Director Emeritus and Senior Mission Consultant, Overseas Ministries Study Center

“Wilbert Shenk, a leading historian of the discipline of missiology, has here written the definitive book on the history of the American Society of Missiology. His personal involvement in the ASM from its very inception, serving in such roles as president and secretary-treasurer, has given him an unparalleled vantage point from which to write this outstanding history.” — Robert J. Priest, President of the American Society of Missiology (2013–14); G. W. Aldeen Professor of International Studies and Professor of Mission and Anthropology, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.
