Student testimonials

Student residenceThe feedback below comes from a variety of AMBS students who rely on student housing as part of their seminary study. It includes several people who live at AMBS and one student who commutes and stays overnight on campus. One comment comes from a single young adult, and one from the father in a family with two small children.

Their comments were used in the AMBS housing brochure, which can be downloaded here.

Alicia Buhler, student originally from Hudson Bay, Sask.

Moving to Elkhart from Manitoba, I chose to live on campus because of the ease of arranging living accommodations from a distance. But there are so many more reasons that I’ve enjoyed living on-campus during my time at AMBS. You can’t beat the commute—going to class, running to pick up a book at the library, or working at my on-campus job does not require me to start my car. I have also appreciated being able to frequent the walking path and labyrinth on campus, and take part in the community garden. Living in community and building relationships with my neighbours has been a formational part of my time at AMBS.

Scott Janzen, student from Henderson, Neb.

"Seminary education is more than the sum of the courses one takes. A significant element of growth happens outside of the classroom and in hallway conversations, by the lounge fireplace on a snowy afternoon, or over food at the table in a friend’s apartment. Living on campus has been a blessing to my seminary experience in part because our close proximity to the library and other students has helped foster these formative interactions. We’re also close to other necessities, like the beautiful AMBS library, campus employment, churches, groceries, local restaurants, and we have the convenience of free high-speed internet access, all in the comfort of our apartment."

Lynne Jacobson, AMBS student living in Portage, Mich.

If you are driving to campus from any distance please consider using the commuter housing that AMBS so graciously offers. I am very grateful to be able to take advantage of the student housing on campus and highly recommend it. The apartments are furnished comfortably and have a Pullman kitchen, full bath and private bedrooms. All one needs to bring is bedding, personal items and food if you want. Commuter housing for me is a little home away from home affording me the peace, quiet, rest and reflection desired for focused study. So, give it a whirl! You can’t beat the cost or convenience.

Jason Grieg, student who moved to campus from Nova Scotia. Jason and Elisabeth Brendebach, his wife, have two young sons

"One of the things I like about living on campus is that it roots me in the here and now of seminary life. There is an intentionality about living on campus that enables me and my family to be present to people here that would not be possible if we lived somewhere else. Living a very “small” and local life aids community building because you see each other often, and can more easily have the time to get to know others. And being close by gives me more opportunities to take part in the prayer and worship life of the seminary, things that often can fall by the wayside in the busy student life."
