Pay attention to the Spirit: Cultivate your ministry of spiritual direction

Spiritual Guidance Studies at AMBS

At AMBS, spiritual direction means we’re in deep conversation with Scripture and with others.

Join in that conversation through three courses for those who want to become spiritual directors or to make spiritual direction a part of their ministry. Help nurture the desire in ourselves and others to follow Christ while paying attention to the presence and activity of the Spirit.

Whether you’re just beginning your work as a spiritual director or honing your skills after years of ministry, our supervised courses will help you pay attention to your inner assumptions, issues and biases.

Explore Spiritual Direction: Foundations, the first level of our supervised program.

You'll learn from scripture, theology, Christian tradition, ethics, psychology, human development, and of course, practice! Offered each year, this course alternates between an on-campus format and a hybrid format (with instruction both online and on campus).

Spiritual Direction: Mystery focuses primarily on the ineffable presence and activity of God as experienced in the lives of directees.

Immerse yourself in both theory and practice through interactive classroom presentations; mentoring and supervision; group prayer; practical reading and writing assignments; and regular meetings with directees of your own.

All spiritual guidance courses are taught by Dan Schrock, D.Min., who has 22 years of experience as a spiritual director.

Schrock was co-editor of An Open Place: The Ministry of Group Spiritual Direction and author of The Dark Night: A Gift of God. He has also worked as a pastor for 28 years.
